LANDAN

or the big smoke as everyone from up North seems to call it. I've been an official londoner for 2 weeks now, though it feels a lot longer and shorter at the same time. I started my new internship which is going really well (Although spending 3 years pleasing yourself, design wise, at uni isn't the best practice for dealing with clients on a day to day basis). But I must say I'm actually enjoying designing for somebody else for a change! I just so happen to be living a stones throw away from the olympic park which is both exciting and aggravating for obvious reasons (trying to travel through Stratford every day is probably going to have me wanting to kill every tourist in sight). Everything is rather terrifying but exciting at the moment. Nothing quite like jumping in at the deep end is there. Here's a few snaps from the past couple of weeks:

Not Dead. busy busy busy

I've been a bit quiet lately, mainly due to the fact that I've been in London without my mac all week at New Blood. What a week it turned out to be! I now have a house to live in in London with my favorite ginger, Mica. As I'm writing this I'm surrounded by boxes, trying to pack up my life. Leaving Carlisle is going to be tough, it has been my home for 3 years and as much as I complain about it I'm going to miss it. It's weird how things work out but I'm excited for the future. Bring on the next chapter. Will post in more detail later!

tut tut VW

I'm usually a huge fan of VW's advertising but recently this one was brought to my attention by a friend:

The adverts fine, it's the soundtrack that's a bit iffy. Here's the original song they've ripped off, really badly.

After repeatedly trying to get Beach House to give them licensing of the song and failing they obviously just decided to rip it completely. It makes me sad that this is the world I want to work in, one that clearly has no respect for other creatives property.  Bad form VW & DDB, really disappointing.

It's finally here

Exhibition time is finally upon us after all of the prep last week and I must say, I'm so soooo proud of everyone. The work looks amazing and anybody going to have a look around over the next week are in for a treat.

Heres my little space:

I also finally found a place to hang up my first ISTD solution:

The exhibition is at the Brampton Road Campus, Carlisle and is open 10am - 4pm (Closed Sunday). The private viewing is on Saturday and I can't wait to show my parents and best friends what I've been up to for the last 3 years. It's all getting a bit emotional now as the end looms. That studio has been like a home to me for 3 years and all my lovely talented classmates have been like an extended family. It's going to be sad to leave everything behind but also exciting to see what the future holds for myself and for all my best friends.

PMA

Positive Mental Attitude. Although it's a phrase that probably derived from those horrible self help books it is something that I try and keep in mind when things get on top of me. At the moment I'm hunting for internships and jobs. It's been a mixed bag really, some designers I have spoken to have been really helpful and kind whilst other have been just out right rude. I get that people are busy but as I always say, it's nice to be nice. Anyway I'm staying positive and hoping that something that fits me perfectly will come along soon!

Currently feel like this:

Self belief is awesome. I refuse to let dickheads ruin my day & so should everyone.

Anyway back to the job hunt! Bye!

NY BABY!

Back from New York after having the best 7 days ever! Fallen head over heals with the huge cultural melting pot that is crammed with the friendliest people. In between doing the classic tourist stuff (which I highly recommend, it's cheesy but amazing!!) I managed to pop in and see a couple of design studios too, the highlight of which had to be the Saatchi & Saatchi offices. Everyone was so friendly and there was such a positive atmosphere in the studio, felt like a home rather than an office.

Oh and apparently in New York, Dolphins are raping everyone? These stickers were everywhere!

I miss it so much but I've come back to Carlisle totally revived and ready to finish out the last part of my degree, starting with exhibition prep and ending in New Blood and (fingers crossed) some form of employment. I've just got my new website up (www.sarahgill.co.uk) so if anyone spots any teething problems that I haven't I'd super appreciate it if you'd let me know. Anyway, din dins are over now, back to work.

At current!

Environmental sustainability in design is something that's close to my heart (thanks to researching it for 8 months during my dissertation) and I'm finally getting round to finishing off my ipad app to promote and help designers in this area. There's a total lack of education on this topic (especially in BA design degrees!) and I'm really hoping that when I go down to New Blood I'll be able to talk to some design companies that can help educate me more in ways to make sustainability at the forefront of my design work!

I'm finally looking forward to graduating, although it scares the hell out of me it's starting to scare me in a good way now. Finally getting some confidence which is good because if you don't believe in yourself no one else will! Also the countdown to New York is getting nearer and nearer which I'm extremely excited about!

Anyway, back to work!
